What Biowaste Actually Works: The Stream Selection Hierarchy

๐Ÿซ‘๐Ÿ› BSF works on most biowaste. That's almost the problem.

01 ยท The variable

What you chase first decides the case

When almost everything is technically possible, the variable that decides whether your case closes is what you chase first.

After cases on 6 continents, biowaste streams split into two clusters. One finds its rhythm in a few cycles. One turns every batch into a battle.

02 ยท Streams that work

The streams that consistently work

  • Food processor side streams โ€” bakery, dairy, fruit and vegetable processing, fish processing. Centralised, year-round, clean, predictable composition. Often producer-paid for landfill today โ€” the gate fee becomes real revenue once a contract is signed.
  • Abattoir / slaughterhouse Cat 3 residue. High-protein, centralised, year-round. Regulatory check first โ€” Cat 1/2 is banned in feed in most jurisdictions, Cat 3 is usually fine.
  • Brewery spent grain. Centralised, ~70% moisture, BCR-friendly. Caveat: dairy and pig farmers usually have first claim โ€” verify volume and price before you build a model around it.
  • Wet market and commercial food waste. Centralised, mixed but workable, year-round in cities with formal collection.

03 ยท Streams that trap

The streams that look attractive but trap operators

  • Municipal household food waste. The obvious target โ€” biggest volume, most political support. Reality: variable composition, plastic contamination, and the "gate fee" most operators model is a payment for collection or disposal, not money the BSF processor will actually see. Model municipal feedstock at $0/t processor revenue until a signed contract proves otherwise.
  • Animal manure. Available, often free, locally abundant. High ash, low protein โ€” BCR drops to 5โ€“10%. Workable as a 30โ€“40% blend into a richer recipe; never as the centerpiece.
  • Crop residue. Plentiful, but typically 10โ€“20% moisture and high-fibre. Requires fermentation pretreatment or mixture to other main substrate โ€” most operations that skip it quietly stop reporting on the stream.
  • Seasonal harvest waste. Real volume for 8โ€“12 weeks, then nothing. Annualised volume claims are misleading; without costly off-season storage you're idle 60โ€“70% of the year.

04 ยท The hierarchy

The hierarchy that runs through it

  • Wet over dry. 60โ€“80% moisture is the larvae's natural feeding zone.
  • Centralised over distributed. Commercial generators over household.
  • Year-round over seasonal. Or two seasonals that overlap into 12 months.
  • Protein-rich over low-protein. BCR drives revenue more than waste volume does.
  • Clean over contaminated. Plastics, heavy metals, antibiotics โ€” once present, hard to remove.

05 ยท What closes

What actually closes

The case that closes consistently is rarely the obvious one. Municipal household food waste โ€” the most-pursued target โ€” is the most difficult on this list (unless you partner with waste company). The ones that close sit in the boring middle: food processor side streams, abattoir Cat 3, brewery grain the dairy farmer hasn't already taken.

If you're scoping a case, work this list backwards: secure the contract first, test the BCR second, build the business case last.
