KALARVO Recipe Test Round 1 Teaser

Less than 4 days. That's how long it took for 10,000 five-day-old larvae to reach this size on 8 kg of substrate.

01 · Setup

One standardised tray setup

Same setup across every recipe — 8 kg substrate, 10,000 5-DOL larvae per tray. Standardised, so the only thing that changes between trays is the substrate itself.

Two things made this happen, and they both come down to climate control:

  • Pre-heated the substrate to 28°C before dosing the larvae. Substrate temperature, not air. Wet substrate is 4–5°C cooler than the air around it because the water actively cools through evaporation. So air was sitting at 33°C to land the substrate at 28°C. Most operators set air to 28°C and wonder why the larvae crawl through cold mud.
  • Substrate as wet as possible — around 75% water — and air humidity held at 75% RH so the substrate didn't dry out from the top while the larvae are still too small to mix and tunnel. Once they're big enough to work the substrate themselves, they manage the moisture; before that, you have to.

02 · Conclusion

Control the conditions

The conclusion: unless you can control these conditions, you cannot maximise BSF larvae potential and you will not get systematic results between trays.
