BSF larvae ready for drying and post-processing in a BSF farm | Manna Insect

Building a professional level BSF farm for under $10,000

Insect farming is gaining traction as a sustainable solution for protein production and organic waste management. Among the most efficient species is the black soldier fly (BSF), whose larvae can convert organic waste into high-protein feed and nutrient-rich frass (fertilizer). Setting up a small-scale BSF farm doesn’t have to be expensive – with the right approach, a fully functional, effective production unit can be built for under 10,000 USD, especially in the developing countries.

Low-cost production unit options

The farm can be set up in an existing structure such as:

– A repurposed warehouse, greenhouse, or chicken shed

– A refurbished 20ft shipping container

– A lightweight new structure built with insulated sandwich panels at locations where weather conditions are favorable

The key in most cases is the insulation; keeping the internal environment stable with minimal energy use and with affordable technology to control the production unit’s internal climate. Since black soldier fly larvae thrive in controlled conditions, proper insulation reduces heating and cooling costs while optimizing the production results to the max.

Automated climate control with Manna MIND

Instead of expensive HVAC systems, the BSF farm uses Manna Insect’s Manna MIND climatization technology, which:

– Fully automates temperature and humidity control

– Adjusts dynamically to external weather changes

– Consumes very little energy, allowing operation on solar power alone

– Does not require plumbing or fixed water lines

– Operates locally sourced affordable and simple equipment

When adding solar panels and batteries, the system can be ideal also in areas with unstable electricity, as it can maintain optimal conditions even during power outages.

Production capacity & labor requirements

A small unit (about the size of a shipping container) can process:

Input: 3-4 tons of organic waste per 7-10 day rearing cycle

Output

  – 600-800 kg of live larvae (for animal feed)

  – 600-900 kg of frass (organic fertilizer)

Labor: Only 6-8 hours per cycle for one person, depending on pre- and post-production requirements

Cost breakdown

In developing countries (where labor and materials are affordable), costs can be kept extremely low:

– Basic lightweight structure: Under $5,000 (if weather conditions are favorable)

– Full production unit (including trays, insulation, and Manna MIND): Under $10,000

– Western countries: $8,000–$15,000 (due to higher material and labor costs)

NOTE! Solar panels may range from 1000-3000 USD and are not included in these calculations. Pre- and post-production equipment vary on the use case, but basic equipment are often included in these calculations.

The most expensive components are usually the insulation and rearing trays, which should be sourced locally. Manna Insect provides guidance on:

– Material lists (shopping lists for local sourcing)

– Insulation requirements

– Equipment selection & assembly

Why this is the most affordable professional insect farm

This setup eliminates the need for costly infrastructure, making it the most budget-friendly professional insect farming solution available by far. By using existing structures, solar power, and automated climate control, small-scale farmers can start producing high-quality insect protein throughout the year with minimal investment, with high yields and excellent survival rates, making it a profitable business opportunity.

For entrepreneurs, NGOs, or farmers looking to enter the insect farming industry sustainably and affordably, this model offers a scalable, low-risk, and eco-friendly solution.
